Series 2 is the excerpts of Director's reports arranged by subject. Series 3 is files arranged alphabetically from departments and individuals with information submitted for the Director's reports.

Born in North Easton, Massachusetts on September 26, 1874, Oakes Ames was the son of Massachusetts Governor Oliver Ames. He received a bachelor's degree from Harvard in 1898, followed by a master's degree in 1900. Ames had a lengthy and distinguished career as a botanist, including serving as supervisor of the Arnold Arboretum from 1927-1937 and as the Arboretum's second director from 1937 to 1945. Peter Shaw Ashton served as director of the Arnold Arboretum from 1978-1987. Born in England, he was educated at Cambridge University, receiving a B.A., M.A. in 1956, and in 1962 a Ph. D. in botany. Elmer Drew Merrill was born in East Auburn, Maine in 1876 and died in 1956. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Maine in 1898 and his master's in 1904. In 1902 he went to the Philippines where he remained for 21 years as professor of botany at the University of the Philippines and director of the Bureau of Science at Manila.
